What should I do if I have constipation after surgery?

Constipation is common after surgery and while taking narcotics.  To help relieve constipation you may take an over-the-counter stool softener (docusate sodium/Colace) or milk of magnesia.  It is recommended to increase fiber intake and drink plenty of fluids as well.
